| Determine the concentration of an unknown KMnO4 solution |
Goal: Using the Virtual Laboratory design and perform an experiment to determine the concentration of an unknown KMnO4 solution to four significant figures.
This Virtual Lab activity is a simplified version of the experiment students perform in the laboratory. You may use it to practice the concepts relating to both the Fowler and Bright and McBride methods of titration. It is not necessary for you to heat the solutions in the simulation, but if you want to, you may use the virtual Bunsen burner.
To prepare a standard solution, weigh out the calculated amount of sodium oxalate using the scale. Remember to add sulfuric acid to prevent the formation of manganese dioxide (which would interfere with the titration).
For additional assistance in this activity, please see the accompanying tutorial. When you have determined the concentration, fill out the Feedback Form at the bottom of this page.
